WebSpears are reach weapons, they are the original polearms, and they are meant to be used in one hand. Plain and simple. 5e just does a lot of stupid crap with weapons, and this happens to be one of the more annoying ones. I would have no problems with a huge pike giving 10 feet of reach. So a giant with a huge pike would have 20 feet of reach. ogres are large and have a 5 foot reach.
